Communication

Informing and inspiring members and reaching out to non-members are key components in keeping congregations healthy.  The growth of technological means have been a challenge to religious organizations as well as to members, whose technical abilities vary significantly.  While I served at Second Parish, we expanded our reach by using some of these technologies.

We created a Facebook group for Second Parish.  You will find my posts through June of 2013.

Here's one of my favorite posts after the Great Snowstorm of 2013:

Second Parish in Hingham Unitarian Universalist
February 28, 2013

I love this picture of Second Parish after the great blizzard. The tree ever so gently bent over to hug the bell tower. Remarkably enough, the only damage seems to be one railing of the balcony broken -- and the tree was on town property, so they came the next morning and took it away. I won't say miraculous, but -- I do love the hugging part.    - Paul

We used Constant Contact to start a weekly email update, News from Second Parish.  Here's a sample.

When I arrived at Second Parish, the website was being maintained (occasionally!) by a volunteer no longer active in the congregation.  I arranged to convert to the then-new UU Templates Project, a content management web system that made it easy for our office administrator (or anyone else with permission) to update the calendar of events, post sermons (text and audio), and put our newsletter and other public documents online.  (Note that a different website has been put in place since I left, the templates having served us well up to that point.)

Of course, communication on paper remains important for many of our congregants, and some simply liked to be able to put the newsletter "on the refrigerator" for reference -- so while we emailed our monthly newsletter to anyone who wished, we also continued to send paper copies to those who preferred that instead.  Attached below you will find a few samples of my newsletter columns.
