Second Parish, Unitarian Universalist
Weekly Update

May 31 Edition

TitleTop From the Minister

Paul

This Sunday, my sermon is entitled "May I Suggest," and it's based on a song of the same name. We all face the perennial questions of faith in our own ways:  Where do we come from?  What are we here for?  Where are we going?  May I suggest that each day is the best part of our lives?

Our Second Sunday Offering a week from this Sunday will be given to help the people of Oklahoma with immediate assistance and long-term aid through the relief fund established by the Southern Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Checks may be made out to the "UU Oklahoma Relief Fund."

musicSpecial Music this Sunday!

This Sunday we will be hosting the a capella singers from the Island Grove Chorus, a group of women doing 4-part harmony style music. Based in Abington, they are members of the Sweet Adelines, the local counterpart to the South Shore Men of Harmony, who did such a wonderful job at a heartfelt service at our church this Winter.  See more info on theirwebsite here.

From the Director of Religious Education
Carol Meyer

In our June 2 religious education class, our children will learn the compelling story of "Joseph and His Brothers." The theme is jealousy/envy. The conversation will center around how to deal with these types of feelings to create a more positive outcome in their lives. The June 9 lesson will continue this story with a "Joseph and the Dreams" lesson. The idea is for the children to have a good time while learning valuable lessons.

Please contact DRE Carol Britton Meyer atdre@secondparish.org for more information about our program, to share ideas, or to ask questions.

Pledge Drive Update

Our annual covenant renewal process is underway. If you have not yet returned your pledge form, we urge you to do so right away. We need an indication of your financial support so we can prepare next year's budget in time for the annual meeting on June 9.  Please send your pledge form to John Belknap at the church as soon as possible.  Thank you for your generous support.

cleanChurch Clean Up Day, Saturday, June 1, 9:00 am

It's time for a spring cleanup indoors and out at Second Parish!  This is our opportunity to clean out our closets and our attic and places in between.  Please join us for a couple of hours on Saturday morning, starting at 9:00 am.  Pickup trucks are needed for dump runs, and you may bring your favorite cleaning or gardening tools.  There will be jobs for everyone, young and old, so please join us for some community service to our own church.

bookBook Group, Wed, June 12, at the Delanos' house

We're reading Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett

Here's a description:

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Put New York Times bestselling authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett together . . . and all Hell breaks loose.
